Mubadala and Dubal Holding to sign 25-year deal with EGA for new power block
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) and Mubadala and Dubal Holding are to sign an agreement to develop a power block and water desalination plant at EGA’s Jebel Ali smelter in Dubai. The new facilities will improve the efficiency of power for aluminium smelting as well as reduce environmental emissions and natural gas consumption.
Rio Tinto completes sale of Dunkerque smelter
Rio Tinto has completed the sale of its 285,000-tpy aluminium smelter at Dunkerque, France, to Liberty House for USD500 million. Liberty House, which is part of the GFG Alliance (Gupta Family Group), has committed to continuing operations at the smelter and has announced plans for the development of additional activity around the site. As previously announced, the proceeds will be returned to shareholders, with the precise timing and form to be announced with Rio Tinto’s 2018 full year results. Rio Tinto estimates that there will be no material tax payable on this transaction.
Rio Tinto re-opens potline at New Zealand’s Aluminium Smelter
On 6 December Rio Tinto officially re-opened Potline 4 at New Zealand’s Aluminium Smelter (NZAS), at Tiwai Point on the South Island. Rio Tinto and its joint venture partner Sumitomo Chemical Co. have invested USD4.1m this year to upgrade and restart the potline, adding 31,000 tonnes of production capacity. Rio Tinto owns 79.36% of NZAS with 20.64% owned by Sumitomo Chemical. NZAS produced nearly 337,000 tonnes of saleable aluminium in 2017 and provides work for around 900 employees and contractors.

Alunorte receives authorization to utilize press filter as first step to resume operations
Hydro’s alumina refinery Alunorte in Brazil was granted authorization on 5 October by the federal environmental agency Ibama to utilize its state-of-the-art press filter technology in the processing of bauxite residues, which will extend the life of Alunorte’s DRS1 bauxite residue disposal area and allow the company to continue operations on safe conditions. The authorization follows an announcement by Hydro on 3 October that Alunorte was preparing for full curtailment of its operation due to an embargo on its press filter and the newly developed bauxite residue deposit area (DRS2).
Hydro and Rio Tinto end acquisition for Isal
Hydro and Rio Tinto have signed an agreement to end the acquisition process for Rio Tinto’s Icelandic aluminium plant Isal, including its interests in Dutch anode facility Aluchemie and Swedish aluminium fluoride plant Alufluor. In February 2018, Hydro made a binding offer to acquire Isal, its 53% share in Aluchemie and 50% of the shares in Alufluor for an enterprise value of USD345m. A sale and purchase agreement was signed on 8 June 2018.
Mecfor unveils automated guided vehicle for aluminium smelters
Mecfor of Saguenay in Quebec, Canada, yesterday unveiled one of its most innovative projects to date: the first automated guided vehicle (AGV) designed and made in North America and destined specifically for the worldwide primary aluminium industry. The vehicle can manoeuvre completely autonomously within complex and harsh environments, such as strong magnetic fields, dust, wide temperature variations and constant interactions with workers and other equipment.
