Power failure at Hydro Karmøy smelter
One of Hydro Karmøy’s two production lines, with an annual capacity of 195,000 tonnes of primary aluminium, suffered a power failure on 1 April.
Power at the affected facility was restored at a lower amperage. The affected facility has 288 production cells, of which 45 were subsequently taken out of production to enable stable operations. This represents around 10% of the total production capacity at the Karmøy plant. The Karmøy technology pilot is not affected by the situation.
It is too early to estimate the financial consequences or when the plant will be able to restart the shut-down cells and resume full production, according to Hydro. Customer impact is expected to be limited. The cause of the power failure is not known, and Hydro is investigating the cause of the incident. Hydro will provide updates on the efforts to resume normal production.
