Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) certifies the Gränges facility in Finspång, Sweden, successfully against the ASI Performance Standard for responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium. The plant has received provisional certification under the ASI interim policy regarding audits, audit-related travel and Coronavirus, which clarifies the reasonable accommodations that can be made to audit plans in consideration of the current Covid-19 situation. The facility has a long history, having produced aluminium products since 1922. It designs and manufactures rolled strip and sheet of aluminium destined for the automotive sector and currently has an annual production capacity of 100,000 tonnes.

Gränges facility has a long history

The ASI certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Governance, Environment and Social, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.

The independent, third-party audit of the Gränges Finspång AB facility was carried out by DNV GL. The audit was undertaken as a ‘desktop’ exercise with a remote review of relevant documentation. Some criteria requiring on-site evaluation by the auditor will be evaluated when an on-site audit can be scheduled.

ASI congratulates Gränges for reaching Performance Standard Certification

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said, “We warmly congratulate Gränges on achieving ASI Performance Standard Certification with Provisional status at their Finspång plant, now the company’s second certified operation. The rolled products for heat exchanger materials that the plant produces play a central role in the thermal management of today’s electric and hybrid vehicles. Gränges’ ASI Certifications demonstrate to their automotive customers that the company is committed to responsible production.”

“Achieving this ASI certification is an important milestone in our ambitious sustainability agenda and an important achievement in our work to constantly develop a broader and more sustainable customer offering. The certification verifies that our aluminium products are produced responsibly and sustainably and provides assurance to our customers and other business partners that we are committed to meeting their increased sustainability requirements and demand for sustainable aluminium. This is a first step towards being able to offer ASI certified aluminium”, says Torbjörn Sternsjö, President Europe.
