Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) announced that Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba) has been successfully certified against ASI’s Performance Standard for responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium. The audit covered the Alba Calciner and Alba Smelter. Their Line 6 expansion project, inaugurated in 2019, has made Alba the world’s largest aluminium smelter outside of China.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Governance, Environment and Social, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions. The independent, third-party audit of the Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba) plant was carried out by DNV GL.

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said “Sincere congratulations to Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba) on achieving ASI Certification, the second Gulf-based company to do so. Aluminium smelters are a critical step in the aluminium value chain, and their commitment to ASI Standards and sustainability and corporate social responsibility more broadly will underpin the value chain as a whole.”

On this occasion, Alba’s Acting CEO Ali Al Baqali stated: “The ASI Certification is truly a proud moment for Alba as not only it recognises our sustainability efforts but also demonstrates our commitment to produce aluminium according to the highest industry standards.

Going forward, positive social impact and creating sustainable value will continue to remain our priority all the while seeking ways to deliver on our sustainable objectives for our people, customers, the aluminium value-chain and all stakeholders.”
